44. Underground Railroad to Toronto

On Thursday, January 20th, Historian Afua Cooper will explore “Routes to Freedom: Ann Maria Jackson, Mother of Seven, and the Underground Railroad to Toronto,” as part of Black History Month.

In 1857, this remarkable women fled slavery in Delaware with seven children to Toronto. Dr. Cooper will also tell the story of “Peggy Pompadour, a local woman who was enslaved by colonial administrator, and Toronto City father, Peter Russell. Both stories reveal the multidimensional nature of Toronto’s Black history. For some it was a place of freedom, a haven; for others it was a place of oppression.”

This lecture will take place at St. Lawrence Hall, The Great Hall on the 3rd floor at 157 King Street East at 5:30 pm. The event is free to the public and refreshments will be served.
