April 24 is a many-splendored day this year. It is Easter Sunday with a bonus for fans of Multicultural Toronto.
Easter is a very sacred day for Christians. It celebrates the resurrection of their lord Jesus Christ. Christian churches will all have special services. For religious events like sunrise services, click on: http://bit.ly/f53VsG. But keep reading to the end before you do.
Easter’s symbolic flower is the white lily. A secular Easter Parade goes from 2pm to 4pm on Queen Street in the Beach with giant rabbits, Elmo, the Cookie Monster, and marching bands. Children hunt for eggs in their homes, at parties, or in events organized by places like the zoo and Colborne Lodge in High Park (for a fee).
Like Christmas, this is a day for family reunions and banquets that include ham or lamb. Many people consider it a day to show off their new fashions in clothing. For a list of secular events see http://bit.ly/f53VsG.

April 24 is also Sham El Neseem, the Egyptian National Holiday. From 4-9pm at the Olympium Olympic Lounge A, 590 Rathburn Rd., Egyptians and their friends will celebrate their spring festival. This is an event that dates from 2700 B.C.E. or even earlier. Entry is $5, free for kids. Coloured eggs & games. Please tell us about it if you go.
April 24 is also Khalsa Day, a special day for Khalsa Sikhs. It is one of my favourite Toronto festivals. My blog on this not-to-be missed event will be posted soon.
