203. Christmas Flower Shows, a Toronto Tradition

Our daughter Linda, who is a gardener for the City of Toronto, has been growing flowers for the city’s flower shows. She told us about the Christmas flower shows December 4 to January 10. They are daily from 10am-5pm, and they are free. Where better to escape the cold and the bleakness of winter!

The opening is at Allan Gardens downtown (Carlton Street between Jarvis and Sherbourne) on Sunday, December 4, from noon to 5pm. (Tel. 416-392-7288). The opening at Centennial Park (151 Elmcrest Road) in Mississauga is Sunday, December 11, noon to 5pm. (Tel. 416-394-8543).  Only the openings will have Santa, carollers, hot cider, cookies, and horse-and-carriage rides.

Poinsettias are the main flower in Toronto’s Christmas tradition and you’ll see lots of them. Romantic candles will light the displays on opening evenings from 5 to 7pm.

Greenhouses are wonderful places to meet people. You can ask questions about plants and Christmas traditions.  If there’s a bridal party there, you can ask about wedding customs in different countries.
