319. Toronto’s Free or Nearly-Free November 3-4, 2012 Multicultural Weekend

 

 

This weekend, there’s Mexico’s Day of the Dead, an Asian festival, the annual Holocaust Education Week, and English country dancing. Most of these are free or almost free.

On Saturday, the delightful Road to Asia will be at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. It will have cultural performances, martial arts demonstrations, and a marketplace with different Asian food and crafts for sale.

 

The Day of the Dead is the time Mexicans remember their ancestors with skulls, pictures, and dances. You can expect Mexican food for sale at Harbourfront too. If your kids survived Halloween without tears of fright, they should enjoy this too.

If you need some exercise, there’s English country dancing with live music at St. Barnabas Church, 361 Danforth Avenue.

If you’re interested in seeing the inside of that beautiful Hindu temple at Finch and 427 at its best, do sign up now for its November 14 celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Guided tours are free and very well organized. Food for the gods are elegantly displayed. I’m taking a group of friends, it’s so special.

 

Annual Holocaust Education Week will be on today and ends November 8. Its scope is wide and includes the massacres in Cambodia in the 1970s and Nanking (1937-38). The Romas in Europe and residential schools in Canada are also highlighted in this event about man’s inhumanity to man and the survival of the human spirit. It is a reminder that we must constantly be vigilant against such abuses. Holocaust Education week is at many venues around Toronto.
