Author and filmmaker Zarqa Nawaz talks about the power of narrative and cultural production for marginalized communities. Jael Richard of the Festival of Literary Diversity will interview her.
Zarqa Nawaz created the world’s first sitcom about a Muslim community living in the west. Little Mosque on the Prairie premiered on CBC in 2007. It finished its 91th episode in 2012 after completing six seasons and continues to be broadcast to over 60 countries. Nawaz is the author of a witty memoir Laughing All the Way to the Mosque, one of my favourite books.
