Suhaag South Asian Bridal Show – February 7, 2016

Bridal shows aren’t just for wedding planners. I love going to see what some members of our South Asian communities consider important, be they the latest fashions in bridal gowns, groom’s tunics, wedding cakes, jewellery, or  thrones.

I look for the latest technology which gives families in Asia a chance to see a wedding in Canada live. The clothing is beautiful, the finest of silks with intricate embroidery made in the old country. It is all a feast for the eyes.

Bridal shows also give opportunities to ask questions like what do planners suggest if the couple is of mixed background, Muslim and Christian, or Hindu and Italian. While waiting for the fashion show to begin, I’ve been able to talk with young people about their aspirations. Would they prefer their parents to spend the money on a condo? A traditional groom on a white horse? a limo? a bicycle rickshaw? or sponsoring a Syrian refugee?

If you are lucky, you might find samples of wedding cake, like this.
