High Park’s famous Japanese cherry blossoms may or may not be fully blooming May 7 or 8. It depends on the weather. If it’s warmer than this week, they could burst open any day. They are usually at their best only one weekend. Check the City of Toronto’s website and heed all warnings about crowds, stagnant car traffic and big, big fines for illegal parking. Best go on a week day and take TTC to High Park and walk. Most of the flowering trees are to the west of the restaurant and they are stunning. The first Japanese Somei-Yoshino Cherry Tree was planted here in 1959 and was a present from the citizens of Tokyo. Thanks Tokyo.

Sarah Doucette, Councillor, Ward 13, writes: “Keep in mind that a planned subway closure May 7 and 8 might coincide with the blossoms, though shuttle buses will be running… Visitors are also reminded to refrain from climbing the trees to view the blossoms, for your own safety and so the trees can continue to bloom for years to come.”
