- It’s still Black History Month so we’ve mentioned a couple Black History events but we’ve also chosen a few other public gatherings that you might find interesting. These include a visit to a Ukrainian Seniors Home and a Muslim Food Fest. If you like dance, we’ve got a couple suggestions too.

- First Nations. CBC’s The Current on the Issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. February 22. 7-9pm. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance. Seating is limited. This event will be broadcast on CBC Radio One the following week. Maureen O’Leary of Maureen’s Reel Irish Dancing will teach a dance workshop and then host a ceilidh from 2–3:30pm. Join the cooks in the historic kitchen while they prepare tasty treats over the fire and listen in while our resident fiddle player performs along with a lumberjack dancing doll at 1:30 and 3:30 pm. NAMF Islamic Center, 4140 Finch Avenue East. “The NAMF Family Fair started in 2008 and is an annual event focused on bringing families together on the statutory holiday of Family Day in Ontario. The fair includes family friendly activities and children’s programs throughout the day, such as face painting, an animal show, science demonstrations, family movies, a multicultural bazaar and an international food court. This event has become a community favourite and continues to draw thousands of attendees each year.” Namf.ca.
Ukraine. Talks/discussions “Aging Parents Information Series”. How to Deal with a Seriously Ill (Palliative-Care) Patient. February 18. 5pm. $10.
“This series of presentations in an informal gathering of peers is aimed to broaden our knowledge about dealing with difficult or forgetful parents and will help increase mutual understanding during various challenging life situations.” Followed by wine and cheese reception. Ruth’s note: We include this event because the subject of aging parents is common to all our cultural groups in Toronto. Many like the Japanese, Chinese, Finns, and Italians have organized seniors’ homes and programs primarily for their own elderly, but available to others. This event gives us an opportunity to learn about what our Ukrainian neighbours are doing.
