People who live on the far edges of downtown Toronto might find some of the following events easier to get to.

Afro-Caribbean. 6th Annual Scarborough Afro-CaribFest. August 26-27. 12-9pm. Free entry. Albert Campbell Square, Scarborough Civic Centre. England. Toronto English Country Dancers. Sunday, August 27. 4–6:30pm. Fee for live music. Walter Zagorski calling; Stephen Fuller on fiddle.  Korea. Korean Harvest Festival. August 25-27. Free. Mel Lastman Square. Easy access at the North York Centre subway station. Meet “Umma” and “Appa” from the hit show Kim’s Convenience! Learn about foot tennis (jokgu) and about taekwondo from the people who started it 2,300 years ago. See ancient and contemporary dance (K-pop). http://koreanharvestfest.com/

Muslim. Muslim Festival of Vaughan. Saturday, August 26. 1-10pm. Free. Mackenzie Glen Park, 220 Cranston Park Avenue. (Jane Street north of Major MacKenzie). Food, entertainment and vendors. https://muslimlink.ca/events/toronto/event/3985-muslim-festival-of-vaughan.

Ruth’s note: I saw the Mississauga version of MuslimFest on August 5 and it was worth the trip from downtown Toronto.  Lots of fun as well as some beautiful serious moments. 


Sri Lanka. India. Tamil Festival. August 26-27. Free. Markham Road north from McNicholl. Stage at Turbina. Food vendors, rides, kids zone, classical and modern Tamil cultural performances. If you don’t know about it already, there’s a lot to learn about this rich culture. Sri Lanka is at the southern tip of India, known in Toronto for its spicy, diverse cuisine and many talented Toronto-based chefs. https://www.tamilfest.ca/.
