Book Launch: The Relevance of Islamic Identity in Canada. This collection of essays with contributions by Canadian scholars, novelists, journalists, artists, and activists, explores what it means to be a Muslim in Canada today. It examines evolving Muslim identity under stress, and provides a snapshot of the recent pre-election climate of manufactured fear and hostility. Controversies regarding niqab, hijab, “barbaric cultural practices,” two-tier citizenship, gender equality, and others are discussed.
Dr Monia Mazigh (National Coordinator of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group) and Haroon Siddiqui (editorial-page editor emeritus of the Toronto Star) will speak about their essays, followed by Q&A. Contributors Safia Fazlul, Zainub Verjee, Narendra Pachkede, and Mayank Bhatt will also be present.
